Step 1: Understand TSA Vape Rules - How to Air Travel with an E Cig
If you’re flying with an e cig, you need to understand the TSA restrictions on vaping. Here are some of the main rules, but it is crucial that you check with your specific airliner to make sure you are following any additional regulations.
First off, it is permitted to carry-on vape devices in bags or in your pocket. However, you cannot check a vape device in a checked bag. More specifically, the FAA prohibits the following devices in checked luggage: vaporizers, battery-powered E-cigarettes, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
As far as in-flight vape activity, vaping is strictly prohibited. Charging your vape device battery is also prohibited as it is very dangerous. You should just leave the vape in your carry-on bag to avoid any issues.
As far as e-liquids, passengers are allowed to carry up to 100ml of liquids such as e-juice bottles. Any additional amount of liquid will have to be checked. Whether carrying ejuice on a plane or checking it in a bag, it is very important to avoid glass containers that can shatter. Shattering ejuice bottles are hazardous and will ruin your luggage too!
Lastly, it is important to note that federally controlled substances such as cannabis products are prohibited on most United States flights.
Step 2: Understand The Vaping Laws in the Country you are visiting
Okay, you’ve made it, you’ve stepped off the plane and onto solid ground. You’re ready to jump right into the vacation of your dreams. But hold on a sec! Let’s rewind. Before you even boarded the plane you should’ve researched the vaping laws in the country you’re visiting. So let’s explore how to travel with an e cig abroad.
***As a general note, the rules and regulations on vaping can change rapidly, therefore you should check the restrictions leading up to your travel date.
There are three main categories of country when it comes to vaping laws.
- Countries where vaping is legal
For these countries, you should be in the clear with being able to vape. However, vaping is often restricted to specific areas/zones (i.e. banned in public spaces, allowed in bars, etc). Therefore, do your research beforehand to avoid issues.
- Countries where vaping is banned
In these locations, penalties for vaping can include fines or worse. Just don’t risk it, it’s really not worth it!
- Countries with complicated vape laws
Some nations have complex regulations regarding e cigs. One common example of this is it being legal to possess e cigs but it being illegal to purchase them. Therefore, you should be extra careful and do additional research if traveling to one of these areas.
